Dementia: problem, risks, effects, and management

I had met my classmate around 4 months back and informed her also about my mom's death. But in a recent email, she wrote to me that I had met her a couple of years back. She also enquired about my mom. Seeing her email, the first thought that came to my mind was: is she suffering from early dementia. I hope not. Maybe, she just forgot about the time that I had met her a few months back. Maybe because it was a hurried and surprise visit.  Nonetheless, dementia is on the rise. It affects people after 60 years of age. The increased life expectancy means that one will see more of such cases in the near future.  India has around 10 million dementia cases out of the world total of 57 million. Men's health suffers the most following divorce, study reveals

We know that a number of factors can affect health. This includes divorce but the impact of it is more on the husband's health than that of the wife. A woman is less dependent on a man but the reverse is true. A man is more dependent on a woman and hence post-divorce, his health suffers more.

Divorce and its immense effect on man's health

Men health is closely linked to a married life unlike a woman. If a man divorces, the ill-effects on his health are enormous. In fact, it is the biggest threat for them. scientists from the University of Copenhagen have shown that if a man lives without a family for over 7 years, his risk of heart attacks, senile dementia and early death rises tremendously.

The study showed that after a divorce, a man has increased levels of interleukin-6 and C- reactive protein in his body. The inflammatory processes increase by 17%. This is due to stress. These harden the arteries, cause blockages in them leading to heart attacks and strokes. Tumors develop and senior dementia set in. Early death results.

Study details

The researchers recruited 4800 people between the age of 48 and 62 years. There were both men and women participants. Their history and blood tests were carried out. The scientists noted that the inflammatory changes were less or absent if the relationship ended after being in it for long time or when the men stayed alone for long. This implies that adjustment and adaptation occurred with time.
