Obesity epidemic of India

Image
Obesity in India is on the rise. It has reached enormous proportions. As I sit and count at airports, the number of women who look obviously overweight and obese, the figures I get is 8 out of 10. And this is around same in children of all sexes and around 6 in 10 men show clearcut overweight and obesity that is obvious even to naked eye. Anthropometric measurements might reveal more of them.  What are the likely causes? I have a theory that starts analysing these cases right from the 2000s or previous century. Junk food eating and sedantry lifestyle had already given an upward push to obesity in last century. And this also gave rise to diabetes mellitus in both men and women. Hence, such mothers also had diabetes in pregnancy. Some who did not have diabetes otherwise had gestational diabetes. From 2000 to 2026 prevalence of gestational diabetes has risen in india. It has even spread to rural areas and recent national data gives a figure of 22.4% which is almost 1 in 4 pregnant mot...

Does regular sexual activity impact weight? How?

Image
Many people are of the opinion that regular sexual activity leads to weight maintenance and can avoid a weight gain. They believe that if they due to any reason are unable to have sex, they may end up gaining some weight. Others feel that makes them gain weight. But observations and surveys have not proven these thinking types to be true. People with regular sexual activity have been seen to also gain weight and those with cessation of sexual activity due to any reason lose weight. But the other way round has been noticed. Thus, the relation between sex and weight is a complex factor. A person’s weight is determined by several other factors that might impact the ultimate weight of an individual.  Weight gain is due to multiple reasons. Several health conditions lead to it. But in otherwise healthy person, it is due to less exercise and more fats and carbs in food. Sexual activity burns calories but is it enough to cause a weight loss or maintain weight? Let us see what studies say.  2019 study of correlation between weight and sexual activity Smith et al conducted a study on 2,200 men and 2,737 women aged ≥50 years (mean 68.2 years). They enquired for sexual activity in last year and last month and tried to find if any association exists between weight and frequency of sexual activity. 73.3% of men and 50% of women reported on being sexual active in last year. In these people, obese and overweight men and overweight women reported more sexual activity in the last month compared to those with normal weight.  Sexual activity as a moderate-intensity physical activity A study carried out on young and healthy couples revealed that the mean energy expenditure during se...
