Food companies and their misleading labels

Image
Food is for nutrition and to provide the body with energy and vital nutrients. Names of foods help us to know what the likely ingredients might be in it. But often, we notice that food names are misleading. They can fool a person into buying only to realize that it did not meet their expectations and imagination. For instance, take the example of samosa. An ideal samosa is refined wheat flour (maida) wrap with mashed potatoes and boiled peas inside. And when we say paneer samosa (cottage cheese stuffed fried dumplings), the picture that comes to our mind is of a wrap of refined wheat flour dough with paneer inside. But to your disappointment, you will find that these samosas are nothing but the normal samosas with mashed potatoes with or without boiled peas and just 1 small piece of cottage cheese at one corner!!! If we talk about rusks, most of these are made of refined wheat flour or maida which is not healthy. Maida is stripped of all the vital nutrients such as fiber, vitamins,

Coronavirus wave created by Modi wave in India

Most of the people have heard or read about The Lancet journal. It is the most reputed international medical journal. In its recent editorial piece, there is an article on the grim situation that India is in now: The Covid crisis. Its analysis also clearly shows what the intellectuals of the land and expert scientists are telling since long: The fault is of the current central government of India and its chief, Modi.

The Lancet and its editorial on the current covid crisis of India

The Lancet's recent issue has an editorial on the severe covid cases in India. There are daily 3-4 lakh cases coming positive for covid and the deaths daily due to the virus touches 4000. And the government is mum. No personal or social media appearances of Modi!  Where is he hiding?

The article states that the covid situation in India is self-inflicted and the government owes an apology to its people. It adds that Modi's refusal to own up his mistakes is only complicating matters and making them worse. The success would lie in Modi accepting his wrongs and making attempts to overcome it. Not otherwise.

More on the article

The piece clearly puts it in frank words:

"[PM] Modi's actions in attempting to stifle criticism and open discussion during the crisis are inexcusable,"

"India squandered its early successes in controlling COVID-19. Until April, the government's COVID-19 taskforce had not met in months. The consequences of that decision are clear before us, and India must now restructure its response while the crisis rages,"

"The success of that effort will depend on the government owning up to its mistakes, providing responsible leadership and transparency, and implementing a public health response that has science at its heart,"

Warnings ignored

The government and its blind loyal followers  (bhakts in local language) are mostly religious fanatics. They were triumphing in the initial decrease in cases of coronavirus. Repeated warnings of a second wave and new variant strains was given to them by national and international experts but the ignorant government purposefully ignored it in the name of economy and religion. The Health Minister,  Harshavardhan was equally responsible for spreading wrong messages. In early March 2021, he went on to say that India has conquered the pandemic and is in its endgame!!! The Lancet adds:

"Despite warnings about the risks of super-spreader events, the government allowed religious festivals to go ahead, drawing millions of people from around the country, along with huge political rallies-conspicuous for their lack of COVID-19 mitigation measures,"

The vaccination drive of India

Lancet has also spoken about the haphazard and largely incomplete vaccination policy of the country. Less than 2%of the population has been vaccinated and irregularly. It is all botched up. The article clearly puts it:

No social distancing in India (Source: TOI)

"At times, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has seemed more intent on removing criticism on Twitter than trying to control the pandemic,"

2.19 crore people affected and 2.4 lakh deaths have taken place. The Lancet states:

"The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimates that India will see a staggering 1 million deaths from COVID-19 by Aug 1. If that outcome were to happen, Modi's government would be responsible for presiding over a self-inflicted national catastrophe,"

The double and triple mutant variants formed on Indian soil have reached the shores of China, France, Nepal and such countries. Will these countries also have to pay the price of the irresponsibility of Modi and his poor governance?
