Obesity epidemic of India

Obesity in India is on the rise. It has reached enormous proportions. As I sit and count at airports, the number of women who look obviously overweight and obese, the figures I get is 8 out of 10. And this is around same in children of all sexes and around 6 in 10 men show clearcut overweight and obesity that is obvious even to naked eye. Anthropometric measurements might reveal more of them.  What are the likely causes? I have a theory that starts analysing these cases right from the 2000s or previous century. Junk food eating and sedantry lifestyle had already given an upward push to obesity in last century. And this also gave rise to diabetes mellitus in both men and women. Hence, such mothers also had diabetes in pregnancy. Some who did not have diabetes otherwise had gestational diabetes. From 2000 to 2026 prevalence of gestational diabetes has risen in india. Which foods cause a bad body odor? How to smell good all day?

Body odor is the result of the secretions of sebaceous glands and also due to sweat. Bacteria act on the proteins and sugars in the perspired matter and metabolize it to produce substances that give the smell from our body. Certain metabolic disorders also give a specific smell to the body and urine. Thus it is genes, personal hygiene, and health conditions that determine the smell. But it is believed that body odor is also determined by the foods that we eat!

Foods and body odor

Thus even though you maintain a high level of personal hygiene you might not smell good because of the food choices you make. You smell what you eat. There are a number of foods such as onions, garlic, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower that have high levels of sulfur compounds in them. When these are metabolized and secreted in sweat, they give that smell that is not liked by many.

Additionally, spicy foods with a lot of cumin, fenugreek also provide a particular odor to the body because they enhance the metabolism of the body and increase its temperature. Thus the sweat secretion increases and this leads to more smell. Tomatoes are also responsible for a bad body odor because of the presence of terpenes in them. As per a study published in the Journal of Chemical Sciences, recruits with a vegetarian diet smelled better and pleasant than those who took meat. Red meat is particularly bad and cutting on it can improve body odor. Fish oil has choline that has a fishy odor.

Alcohol not only gives the breath a smell but also the smell that goes to the body. This is because alcohol is metabolized in the liver and acetic acid is released. This comes out from the breath and sweat. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables have a lot of carotenoids that give a positive breath and sweat.
