Dementia: problem, risks, effects, and management

I had met my classmate around 4 months back and informed her also about my mom's death. But in a recent email, she wrote to me that I had met her a couple of years back. She also enquired about my mom. Seeing her email, the first thought that came to my mind was: is she suffering from early dementia. I hope not. Maybe, she just forgot about the time that I had met her a few months back. Maybe because it was a hurried and surprise visit.  Nonetheless, dementia is on the rise. It affects people after 60 years of age. The increased life expectancy means that one will see more of such cases in the near future.  India has around 10 million dementia cases out of the world total of 57 million. This is a huge percentage. It affects not only an individual but the whole family. There is this individual who is physically okay but mentally absent. How to beat the heat of summers? Refreshing drinks and more...

 Summers are awful especially in the Tropics. Most people cannot tolerate it and get uncomfortable and irritable with it. Appetite falls and one is thirsty all the time. Dehydration and salt depletion can set in with excessive sweating. Replenishment of the lost water and salts such as sodium and potassium is vital for well-being. So what should be done? How to beat the heat?

1. Stay indoors as much as possible

2. Use roofs that do not become overheated.

3. Use fans

4. Use air-conditioners but do not let the blast come directly to your face. 

5. Shower frequently

6. Do your work in early morning or late evenings

7. Wear light-colored and thin cotton fabrics. Avoid dark clothes and synthetic clothing. 

8. Use umbrellas and parasols when outside

9. Use sun tans to protect the skin

10. Decrease solid food intake and switch to watery meals

Foods that are good in summer

Have more of watery and pulpy fruits and fruit juices of real fruits. Drink water more frequently and salted drinks are better in these hot months. Prefer cool drinks and avoid hot beverages. Have ice-creams and ice-candies. 

A. Simple lemon juice or lemonade. This is a cheap drink that one can make at home easily. Take a glass of water, add 1 teaspoon of sugar, a pinch of salt, and few drops of lemon juice. Keep in the frig to cool and drink frequently and when thirsty.

B. Jaljeera and Aam-panna small sachets are available freely in general food shops and are very cheap. Just pour the packet into a glass of cold water and consume for refreshment and energy. 

C. Sattu flour drink. This flour is available in India. Add water, sugar, and mix well. It is hydrating, filling and gives instant energy. 

D. Glucon-D sachets are available that can be poured into water and mixed  it gives a cooling effect  

E. Thin buttermilk or Chaas. Add salt and consume at room temperature or cold. It has 120 calories per glass. If you are worried about fat of the milk product, you can choose low-fat buttermilk or use low-fat curd to make it.

F. Chilled coconut water. This is also good during summers. Gives energy and potassium. 

G. Sugarcane juice is also a good option to beat the heat. Besides, mango pulp juices hydrate and also give calories. 

H. Barley water is good for hot weathers

I. Mint drinks also serve a good purpose during summers. 

J. Honey in water

K. Milk that is diluted with water. It is drunk in Punjab and called Kachhi Lassi. 

L. Watermelon juice is absolutely a wonderful fruit and juice form for hot climates.

M. Ice-creams. As candy sticks, cones, cups, blocks, or buckets. Very good for summers. Amul has economical and good variety ice cream range from as low as INR 5. Ice-golas are also great ways to beat the heat. Softy and ice crushes have similar purpose. 

Sabja seeds can also be added to drinks for the extra cooling effect. So what are you waiting for? Rush and adopt these in your weekly food regimen and stay well hydrated and refreshed!!!
