Chinese restaurants are present worldwide. But do you know that some of the popular Chinese food dishes served in these restaurants are actually not authentic. They are not eaten in China and they are not traditional Chinese foods. Which are these foods?
Chinese restaurants and their Chinese food dishes
Chinese restaurants globally serve a lot of Chinese food dishes. But some of these are not Chinese. No one in China eats those dishes. And they are actually just a westernized version of the Chinese dishes in order to cater to the wider appeal. They are entirely new or just modified versions of the original Chinese foods.
In China, diet is mostly plant based with little meat. Whereas, the Chinese foods in American Chinese restaurant usually meat heavy and sweeter and more fried. These 5 Chinese dishes are not known in China.
General Tso's Chicken
Not found in China. This is fried chicken with sweet to spicy taste. This is high in calories and saturated fats as well as sodium. And it is unhealthy.
Chop Suey
Some enterprising Chinese restaurateurs invented this dish to fill the stomach of miners who were addicted to alcohol. The cooks took all the leftovers, added soy sauce and served it to the miners. This is high in salt due to the sauce content.
Crab Wontons
These are fried dumplings containing crab meat and cream cheese. Many Chinese are lactose intolerant. Hence this food is not part of their diet in China. But in the USA, it is a famous Chinese food.
The crab meat is high in protein and zinc. But the cream cheese is full of saturated fats. And deep frying increases its unhealthy nature.
Beef and Broccoli
This is not eaten in China. It is unhealthy unless need is lean and from grass fed cows. Beef has protein, B vitamins, and minerals. And broccoli has antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Fortune Cookies
These cookies have edible sugar, flour, vanilla, and sesame oil. They came from Japan and not China. Chinese prefer fruits for desserts and snacks and not cookies.
