 During my trip down South, I had the opportunity to watch common people enjoy traditional southern foods. Idlis are one such popular food items that can be consumed anytime of the day. They can be had during breakfast, lunch, or dinner or anytime in between.  Idlis are traditionally South Indian delicacies. They are rice and lentil cakes that are steamed. They are usually salty but in Mauritius, you will find sweet varities as well in small shops and restaurants there.  Idlis are healthy food items and are a good source of carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. They have minerals and vitamins and have the goodness of fermented foods too. They are served with sambhar (curry made of dal) and chutney (coconut, tomato or the like). 9 headache-causing drinks in patients with migraine!

 Headaches are common but come with different frequencies. In some with migrainous headaches, it is more frequent. In them, certain foods can also cause them. But often, they tend to forget that there are also certain liquids that can trigger these headaches. Which are these fluids or drinks that people with migraine should be careful about?

1. Alcohol and alcoholic beverages

The notorious among these alcohols is the red wine. It has three times more power than beer to trigger the headache. The other alcohols that can cause it are beers, white wine, whiskey, champagne, Scotch, liqueur etc. These drinks have sulfites, tyramine, histamines in them that cause these attacks. Alcoholic drinks also exert a diuretic effect on the body. This leads to dehydration and dehydration or fluid loss causes headache.The quantity consumed also matters more than the kind of drink. Also, highly processed wines are more hurtful. Low input wines use native yeast that add very little SO2 and  sulfites into it. They are therefore safer.

These can also trigger headaches in some people.

3. Chocolate drinks

Cocoa has caffeine in it. This precipitates a migraine attack. Therefore drinks with added chocolate can also cause problems in such people. 

4. Frozen liquids

When frozen liquids or very chilled liquids are consumed rapidly, they cause headaches. This is especially so after a strenuous exercise of when body is in an overheated state.

5. Caffeinated beverages such as tea or coffee or cola

The caffeine in these cause headaches in some.

6. Cultured daily product Buttermilk

These can also be the root cause of headaches in some sensitive people. 

7. Drinks with artificial sweeteners

Drinks with added artificial sweeteners especially aspartame can lead to migraine attack.

8. Canned soups

These can cause headaches in some people.

9. Soups made of meat extracts or bouillon with MSG as preservative. MSG can cause a migraine attack. Hence soups containing it are bad for such people.
