Obesity epidemic of India

Obesity in India is on the rise. It has reached enormous proportions. As I sit and count at airports, the number of women who look obviously overweight and obese, the figures I get is 8 out of 10. And this is around same in children of all sexes and around 6 in 10 men show clearcut overweight and obesity that is obvious even to naked eye. Anthropometric measurements might reveal more of them.  What are the likely causes? I have a theory that starts analysing these cases right from the 2000s or previous century. Junk food eating and sedantry lifestyle had already given an upward push to obesity in last century. And this also gave rise to diabetes mellitus in both men and women. Hence, such mothers also had diabetes in pregnancy. Some who did not have diabetes otherwise had gestational diabetes. From 2000 to 2026 prevalence of gestational diabetes has risen in india. What is Desserto? How this vegan leather is made and used?

 Since leather is made from animal hide, many companies have invented and started making vegan leather that is completely animal-free. But for that look of a leather, plastic-derived materials are required. But there is some great news on that front. There is a vegan leather called Desserto that is made from cactus. It is from Mexico and has shaken up the industry and made people go for it. 

Desserto, what is it? 

Desserto is a type of leather that is completely cruelty-free. There is no killing of animals involved since it is derived only from nopal cactus leaves. Hence it is natural and organic. It is the first if it's kind of leather made from cactus. It has the Caputo make this vegan leather industry more sustainable.

Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez from. Mexico had shown their product to the world in in Milan in 2019 at the International Leather Fair Lineapelle 2019. Their company Adriano Di Marti manufactures it. Also, in the same year, the product was also displayed at the RawAssembly in Australia. The RawAssembly is a sustainable raw materials sourcing event. And it fid create a great buzz at the event and was of interest for the participants. 

Characteristics and uses of Desserto

The fabric is partially biodegradable and organic. It is soft and durable and possesses a high quality. One can use it to make clothes, furniture covers, various accessories and car interiors. Adrián López Velarde, co-founder and Vice-president of the company said:

"After two years of research and development, we managed to produce a suitable material that complies with the features and technical/mechanical specifications required by those industries that use animal or synthetic leather,” 

The two were inspired to work on this project after they felt deep about the plastic pollution crisis in the world. And their eyes felt on the non-fussy nopal cactus that grows plenty in Mexico.

Aim of the company 

The company wants to not make their own products from the leather fabric. But they want to sell it to other fashion brands and designers. Adrián said:

"It’s the right time to offer this alternative, because not only are consumer industries interested in new materials like these, but also more and more end-consumers are demanding environmentally friendly materials,"

"The biggest challenge we have encountered is finding a way to make our materials accessible for small and medium-sized companies, because sometimes minimum purchase quantities are a barrier for them. This is why we always try to have an inventory so they can buy small quantities, and we are also working with potential suppliers who can make our materials available for everyone."

I had met my classmate around 4 months back and informed her also about my mom's death. But in a recent email, she wrote to me that I had met her a couple of years back.
