Dementia: problem, risks, effects, and management

I had met my classmate around 4 months back and informed her also about my mom's death. But in a recent email, she wrote to me that I had met her a couple of years back. She also enquired about my mom. Seeing her email, the first thought that came to my mind was: is she suffering from early dementia. I hope not. Maybe, she just forgot about the time that I had met her a few months back. Maybe because it was a hurried and surprise visit.  Nonetheless, dementia is on the rise. It affects people after 60 years of age. The increased life expectancy means that one will see more of such cases in the near future.  India has around 10 million dementia cases out of the world total of 57 million. This is a huge percentage. It affects not only an individual but the whole family. There is this individual who is physically okay but mentally absent. Black and white fungus both increasing in India: white is more dangerous, say doctors

While fungus and black fungus both are increasingly seen in coronavirus patients in India. So much so that some states have asked the health authorities to declare it as an epidemic in their region.

Black fungus or mucormycosis

Increased incidences of black fungus or mucormycosis are observed in those who are coronavirus-positive in India. Gujrat is the worst-affected as regards the black fungus. The state doctors have requested it to be called an epidemic in their stare considering the magnitude of cases coming up in those who test posits for coronavirus.

The fungus appears in immunocompromised states of coronavirus. As if this was not enough, now white fungus cases in these patients are also on the rise. And the white fungus is more dangerous than the black fungus.

White fungus and coronavirus cases

Doctors from states such as Bihar have reported that they are finding an increasing number of cases of white fungus in those infected with coronavirus. Patna city has documented a number of such cases. Dr. Arunesh Kumar, from Paras Hospital has said that this White fungus is more dangerous than the black one.

Like the black fungus, it occurs due to the immunodeficiency induced in the patients of coronavirus. And when Duchess patients cone in contact with unhygienic environments, the fungus finds its way into their body and flourishes there. Dr. Arunesh said:

“Thus sanitation is important,”

The mold is found in water. And it infects not only the lungs but also other vital body organs such as nails, skin, stomach, kidney, brain, private parts and mouth. They have some symptoms like covid but may test negative on covid tests. Imaging such as X-rays and CTScans are required for accurate diagnosis. The doctor added:

“Those who have weak immunity like diabetes, cancer patients, and those who are taking steroids for a long period of time must take special care as they are more at risk. It is also affecting those coronavirus patients who are on oxygen support,”

4 cases have been diagnosed until now.
