Ways of eating idlis

 During my trip down South, I had the opportunity to watch common people enjoy traditional southern foods. Idlis are one such popular food items that can be consumed anytime of the day. They can be had during breakfast, lunch, or dinner or anytime in between.  Idlis are traditionally South Indian delicacies. They are rice and lentil cakes that are steamed. They are usually salty but in Mauritius, you will find sweet varities as well in small shops and restaurants there.  Idlis are healthy food items and are a good source of carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. They have minerals and vitamins and have the goodness of fermented foods too. They are served with sambhar (curry made of dal) and chutney (coconut, tomato or the like). Sabja seeds: origin, benefits for health, nutrients, and side-effects!

 Sabja seeds are basil seeds and are also called tukumaria. They are commonly put in cool summer drinks and faloodas. It is a belief in South Asia that it cools the body and refreshes it. More on it below:

They are tiny and black and tear-shaped. Their plant family is Ocimum basilicum. They should be confused with Chia. The plant is a medium-sized shrub and grow in warm tropical climate. They are known since 5000 years back and are part of Vietnamese, Italian as well as Indian dishes and drinks. They are part of most desserts. 

Benefits of Sabja seeds

These seeds are claimed to have many health benefits. They are usually used soaked in water or fluids such as soft drinks. They swell and acquire a gelatinous nature. It is said that they help in cleansing the stomach wall, help bowel movements, and flushes toxin out of the body. It is fiber rich and has minerals and vitamins in it such as calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin K, and folic acid. They have ample amount of anti-oxidants, proteins, carbohydrates, and good fats. They aid better sugar control in diabetics and also enhance immunity. They have low calories but are loaded with nutrients. After soaking in water, two teaspoons of sabja seeds provide 40 calories. Thus they are good for obesity and weight reduction. This happens also because the seeds delay digestion and prevents over-eating. They produce satiety faster and with small amounts.

They act as food thickeners and are used in emulsification. Bad cholesterol is curbed in blood and kidneys, heart, and nervous system functions are assisted. It is diuretic and helps in urinary tract infections and decreases heartburns. It is a source of instant energy with 42% carbohydrates. They are also rich in Omega 3 fatty acids that fights depression, anxiety, improves vision, and foetal development. Metabolic activity is improved and ADHD is controlled. It also acts against body inflammation. Vitamin E is good for skin, psoriasis, eczema, hair, and prevention of skin cancers. It is anti-aging and good for constipation. 

It is also good for mouth ulcers due to its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal action. 

How to consume them?

Soak them in water for 30 minutes. After swelling, a white film coats each seed and it starts releasing anti-oxidants and digestive enzymes. One can sprinkle them on drinks and ice-creams, faloodas, and desserts. It can also be used atop soups.

Adverse effects of Sabja seeds

It has been linked with sudden drop of heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar. It has been linked to infertility with men. To be cautious in consuming it in pregnant and lactating mothers. Also do not overuse for children. It slows blood clotting and should not be used in operated patients. At least two weeks before a sheduled surgery, its use should be stopped. It can cause nausea, vomiting and loose motions in some or if consumed in large amounts. There could be abdominal discomfort or headache.
