New non-fried microwaved healthy delicious Pani Puri fun

Image
Pani Puri is an Indian delicacy and street food. People of all ages relish it.  It consists of a stuffed wheat puri (puffed food) with spicy and tangy water. The stuffing is of soaked and boiled and cooked white peas (ragda) and mashed potatoes.  But the puri made of wheat flour is fried in oil to puff it. This implies more oils and fats going into our gut and body. Health conscious individuals and obese individuals might therefore be concerned about eating too much of Pani Puri. They have an appetite for it but have to fall short of appetite appeasement due to the high fat content.  Bug no more. You can make non-oily puris in a microwave. Steps are: 1. Purchase Pani Puri discs available in market in supermarkets and stores. They come in packets made by different companies. They are made from wheat flour, semolina, vegetable oil and salt. 150 g packet has around 60-64 puri discs. 2. To puff them, place them on the microwave plate. Keep each disc separately without touchin...

The relation between sexual activity and weight is a complex one and not predictable!

Weight gain is due to multiple reasons. Several health conditions lead to it. But in otherwise healthy person, it is due to less exercise and more fats and carbs in food. Sexual activity burns calories but is it enough to cause a weight loss or maintain weight? Let us see what studies say.

2019 study of correlation between weight and sexual activity

Smith et al conducted a study on 2,200 men and 2,737 women aged ≥50 years (mean 68.2 years). They enquired for sexual activity in last year and last month and tried to find if any association exists between weight and frequency of sexual activity. 73.3% of men and 50% of women reported on being sexual active in last year. In these people, obese and overweight men and overweight women reported more sexual activity in the last month compared to those with normal weight.

Sexual activity as a moderate-intensity physical activity

A study carried out on young and healthy couples revealed that the mean energy expenditure during sexual activity was 3.6kCal/minute and its mean intensity was 5.8 METS. Hence sexual activity is a significant exercise. It has been linked to better physical and mental health. The percentage of cardiovascular events, prostate and breast cancer risk is decreased. Quality of life is more. But it was not clear whether good health promotes more sexual activity or it is the other way round. The cause-effect link remains uncertain.

Previous studies on this matter

Earlier studies have shown that those who are overweight have diminished physical activity. But as regards their sexual activity, no studies specifically addressed this aspect of physical activity. The 2019 study revealed that in fact of those with excess weight actually engaged in more sexual activity. It may be a natural way to counteract the ill-effects of excess weight on heart and blood vessels. The excessively-gained weight may be due to long-term stable cohabitating relationship and the increased sexual activity was not enough to negatively impact it. Also, the gained weight did not decrease the frequency of sexual activity in men. But in obese women, it was less probably due to decreased sexual arousal in them. Body image and decreased confidence also decreases sexual arousal and activity.

Couples who are on the verge of divorcing have less sexual activity and lose weight during and after the divorce. This is probably due to tension and diminished appetite during the trying times

Thus, despite sexual activity, middle-aged pepple gain weight and despite no activity, divorcing couples lose weight. Thus one can see that tje relation between sexual activity and weight is a complex one. A number of other factors are acting simultaneously to influence weight.
