Food companies and their misleading labels

Image
Food is for nutrition and to provide the body with energy and vital nutrients. Names of foods help us to know what the likely ingredients might be in it. But often, we notice that food names are misleading. They can fool a person into buying only to realize that it did not meet their expectations and imagination. For instance, take the example of samosa. An ideal samosa is refined wheat flour (maida) wrap with mashed potatoes and boiled peas inside. And when we say paneer samosa (cottage cheese stuffed fried dumplings), the picture that comes to our mind is of a wrap of refined wheat flour dough with paneer inside. But to your disappointment, you will find that these samosas are nothing but the normal samosas with mashed potatoes with or without boiled peas and just 1 small piece of cottage cheese at one corner!!! If we talk about rusks, most of these are made of refined wheat flour or maida which is not healthy. Maida is stripped of all the vital nutrients such as fiber, vitamins,

Line-breaking in the vaccination program against coronavirus in the USA! What are the reasons?

The speed of vaccine production is limited. Hence the US government and health authorities had prioritized the people who needs to be vaccinated first. Hence the high-risk groups such as frontline healthcare workers and nursing home residents were first vaccinated. But now news is that people not in line have also received the vaccines. How?

The USA and its Covid-19 vaccine drive

The USA is heavily affected by the Covid-19 virus. Cases and deaths due to it are high. The vaccination drive was launched more than a month back. The frontline healthcare workers and longterm nursing home residents were first on the list to be vaccinated. They are at high risk of exposure and also form the vulnerable group for Covid. Also vaccine production has its limits and hence supply is less than the demand.

But now news is pouring in that many people not on this initial list also got the vaccine out of turn. How did they manage it?

Out of turn vaccination-reasons

Arthur Caplan, head of the medical ethics division at the NYU School of Medicine said:

"There's dozens and dozens of these stories, and they really show that the rollout was a complete disaster in terms of selling fairness,"

"It wasn’t that we didn’t have consensus (on who should go first). We didn’t pay attention to logistics, and that drove distribution, not rules."

Casino executive Rodney Baker and his wife, actress Ekaterina Baker took a chartered plane last month to a remote place of Canada where vulnerable members of the White River First Nation were getting vaccinated. They said that they were employed in the local hotels and managed to get the jabs. But they are likely to be fined for it. Kluane Adamek, Yukon Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations stated:

"Like so many, I'm shocked and angry, but not surprised,"

"These actions are a blatant display of disrespect and an exemplification of true privilege and entitlement; a selfish millionaire and his wife stole doses of the vaccine from a vulnerable population, and put an entire community, nation and region at risk."

More reasons for out of turn vaccine receipt

Some people bribed doctors to get the vaccine. Others managed to get over the vaccination appointment codes. Some also lied and impersonated to get the vaccine. Polk County, Florida's "2020 Paramedic of the Year" last month forged paperwork and stole 3 doses of the vaccine. In Philadelphia, a 22-year old stole 4 doses to vaccinate his friends.

Wealthy people, celebrities, and board members of hospitals and care facilities procured vaccines before their turn to have one came. This meant that someone who needed it more than them did not get it. It speaks of their selfishness. This has happened in almost all states of the USA.

Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington issued the following statement:

"In retrospect we understand that in our haste to vaccinate people quickly – including certain members of our hospital community – we created the impression that some people are able to use their access to unfairly get a vaccination appointment,"

Washington state Health Department stated:

"VIP scheduling, reserving doses for inequitable or exclusive access and similar practices are banned and will not be tolerated."

Some people got vaccinated when the vaccine vial was thawed and there were left-over doses because someone did not turn up for the scheduled appointment.

Some hospitals in Seattle faced power outrage and unexpected freezer failure at night. Hence they sent out emergency calls on social media to people of even low-priority groups to come and get vaccinated before the vaccine vial turns useless due to loss of cold storage.

But deliberate line-jumping should be avoided and addressed properly. Dr. William John Moss, executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health blamed the ambiguity of vaccination eligibility criteria and improper logistics for these issues. Maybe penalties for line-breakers would help decrease the problem. Stringent verification might also help.
