Dementia: problem, risks, effects, and management

Image
I had met my classmate around 4 months back and informed her also about my mom's death. But in a recent email, she wrote to me that I had met her a couple of years back. She also enquired about my mom. Seeing her email, the first thought that came to my mind was: is she suffering from early dementia. I hope not. Maybe, she just forgot about the time that I had met her a few months back. Maybe because it was a hurried and surprise visit.  Nonetheless, dementia is on the rise. It affects people after 60 years of age. The increased life expectancy means that one will see more of such cases in the near future.  India has around 10 million dementia cases out of the world total of 57 million. This is a huge percentage. It affects not only an individual but the whole family. There is this individual who is physically okay but mentally absent. The person needs custodial care and it could turn out to be expensive. It is also emotionally disturbing to see your loved one in that state of...

USA and China clash over the coronavirus origin investigation in Wuhan!

There is problem between the USA and China over the WHO's investigation in Wuhan regarding the origin of coronavirus pandemic. Was it a natural disaster, or an accident, or a deliberate attempt to destroy the world? America wants to interrogate the caregivers, patients, lab workers in order to know the exact cause of the viral source. But China is against this. Why? Is China trying to hide something?

WHO and its special investigative team

WHO-led independent experts have reached Wuhan on 14 January 2021. They want to determine the likely cause of the virus. They are now in quarantine for 2 weeks before they begin their work in Wuhan. Currently, from their quarantined spots they are in talks with their Chinese counterparts by means of teleconferencing.

The USA is totally unhappy with China's non-transparency in this matter. It has accused China of hiding the initial magnitude of the problem. They feel valuable time was lost there and led to the virus going uncontrolled and expanding into a pandemic. They are not satisfied with the terms of the visit in which the Chinese have done the first phase of the research.

What US experts demand?

Garrett Grigsby of the Department of Health and Human Services is heading the US delegation. The team has demanded that China should share with them the complete details of the animal, human, and environmental samples it collected from the wet markets of Wuhan where the virus is said to have originated in 2019 end. He said:

We have a solemn duty to ensure that this critical investigation is credible and is conducted objectively and transparently,

He wants genetic data of the virus to compare it with the other new variants of the virus. This will help to know the overlap and might help in pinpointing the source of the virus. The Australian delegation also wants access to all 'relevant data, information and key locations'.

China and its stand

Sun Yang,director-general of the health emergency response office of China’s National Health Commission said:

“The virus origin studies are of a scientific nature. It needs coordination, cooperation. We must stop any political pressure.”

WHO emergency chief Mike Ryan said:

There are no guarantees of answers,”

He added:

"It is a difficult task to fully establish the origins and sometimes it can take two or three or four attempts to be able to do that in different settings.”
