Have you ever tasted Goyaves de Chine or Chinese guavas?  Many of us like and enjoy soda drinks! We all can have it any time of the day; with meals, without meals, for quenching thirst etc. The fizzy drinks add that zing to our lives and hence we do not mind having it. But it has a host of ill-effects on the body including on weight, dentition, muscles and the like. But are you aware that soda drinks can also shorten your life by years? No, then read this to know how!

Soda drinks are for every occasion. With food, alone, on the go, during summers, during parties etc. One cannot imagine life without it. People of all ages, countries, religion, gender, race, creed enjoy it. No doubt the multi-national companies that manufacture them are getting a lot of revenue for it!

But these drinks have their share of ill-effects on the body. They can erode the tooth enamel. weaken the muscles, make you feel more hungry and hence put on weight. These are sugar-filled soft drinks with added carbon-di-oxide and acids. You take in 17% more foods with these drinks. This could end up with more than 14 pounds of weight gain per year. 

A study conducted and published in 2019 in Circulation Journal found that men and women who drink more than 2 sugary beverages per day have a 21% increased risk of death compared to those who have it only once a month. The risk of heart and blood vessel complications and stroke is increased by 31%. Your work performance comes down and you may feel listless and fatigued daily. You also will be more irritable. It could become an emotional roller coaster ride for many. Your memory may go down. Risk of type 2 diabetes increases. Besides, depression chances rise. 

So should you totally stop soda drinks! Better, but if you cannot, then try this. 

1. Cut down the amount consumed per day to less than one can per day. 

2. Avoid diet cola and soda. The same study revealed that mortality risk is increased 28% with diet cola compared to sugar-sweetened soft drinks. The latter increases mortality by 8%. This is because diet coke has artificial sweeteners in it.

3. Replace the meals with healthy, low-calorie foods to fix the excess sugar of the soda drinks. 

4. Do not consume sodas with artificial colors such as yellow-5 and red-40. These can damage the DNA of the body and lead to cancer formation. Hence avoid them and stick to the ones with natural colors. Check the labels well before purchasing it. 

5. Do not have soda before a workout because it prevents proper hydration. 

6. Avoid drinking from cans. The aluminium of the cans has an epoxy lining that contains BPA. This raises blood pressure and can harm you. 

7. When caffeinated drinks are consumed at night, they affect sleep pattern. With less sleep, the circadian rhythm is upset. Also, aging is increased with lessened sleep. Hence avoid late-night soda drinks.
