The Tachikawa branch of the Tokyo District Court found him guilty of killing, dismembering, and storing the bodies of the nine victims in his apartment. The apartment was in Zama, a place near Tokyo. He was also called Twitter Killer and the news of his crime had shocked Japanese people and also the world.

The police had arrested Takahiro in 2017 when they discovered dead bodies of 8 females and 1 male in the cold-storage cases in his house.

Takahiro’s crime

The police then investigated the case and found that Takahiro had a Twitter handle. He used to approach the victims via this social media platform. He used to select people who had posted suicidal tendencies on their social media. He used to communicate with them and offer his assistance in making their wish come true. His name on Twitter was Hangman.

Hangman would then invite the people who agreed for that kind of death to his apartment. All of these were women and there were female teenagers as well. He used to first rape them and then kill them. The man whom he killed was the boyfriend of one of the women who had accompanied her to the house. Takahiro killed him in order to silence him about the crime.

Defense lawyers and their arguments

Takahiro’s defense lawyers put forth the argument that he was just assisting the victims and fulfilling their wishes to die. But later, Takahiro said that he had killed the victims without their consent. The presiding Judge Naokuni Yano also agreed that none of the victims had agreed to be killed and that Takahiro had killed them of his own accord. The Judge stated that the crime was of heinous nature and had led to apprehension and fear in the community. He added that social media these days has become an indispensable part of life and such happenings on it are a matter of concern.
