The new Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine led to an allergic reaction in two NHS workers. Hence now regulators have issued a warning that people with significant allergic reactions in the past should avoid the vaccine.
Allergy to the new Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine
NHS health care workers are getting the new covid-19 vaccine of Pfizer/BioNTech. But two workers developed an allergic reaction to the component of the vaccine. And now after this, the health care regulators have issued a warning and said that all those people who have a history of significant allergies to food, medicines, or other vaccines should not take the new covid-19 vaccine.

The two NHS workers who developed the allergy had it immediately after the jab was given to them. They immediately took medical help and are fine now. They have a history of severe allergic reactions and used to carry adrenaline pens with them. Their reaction was an anaphylactoid one and they had a skin rash, breathlessness and probably some drop in their blood pressure recordings. But luckily, they did not have the severe and fatal anaphylactic reaction to the vaccine. But are there chances that someone might have an anaphylactic reaction to the vaccine? No one knows and only time will give the answer. Hope that it is not after someone dies due to it.
Experts and what they state?
Experts state that such reactions can occur with new vaccines. It has happened even with the past vaccines that are now on schedule on the immunization lists. Professor Stephen Powis, medical director of NHS in England said:
"This is common with new vaccines."
As a precaution, he said that people with allergies should not take the vaccine.

Dr. June Raine, head of the MHRA said:
"It is right to take this step now and we have the experience on it."
They say that these reactions are not uncommon and have also taken place in the past with other vaccines. Professor Peter Openshaw, doctor of immunology at the famous Imperial College of Medicine said:
"The fact that we know so soon about these two allergic reactions and that the regulator has acted on this to issue precautionary advice shows that this monitoring system is working well."
React with head and not gut
Experts feel that one should not overreact to these allergic reactions in people. They feel that such reactions are known and expected and the robust monitoring system will take care of it well. There is no reason to get worried and overly concerned about the safety of the vaccine. They claim that it is as safe as the other vaccines that people are used to taking and one should not avoid the vaccine for fear. But yes, if you have a history of allergy, inform the doctor about it and ask on their opinion on whether you should or should not take it.
